Calvary Chapel’s Steady Slide Into Apostasy
In 1965 Chuck Smith founded what is now known as Calvary Chapel. The 1960’s were a tumultuous time in America. The Vietnam War was at its peak; the Cold War was still raging on; people were on edge following the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, and the youth were rebelling. Hippies began protesting the “establishment” and advocating “free love” and experimental drug use. These directionless youth were, perhaps providentially, being primed for someone to lead them.
Calvary Chapel began with 25 people and has blossomed into a network of 1700 independent Calvary Chapels. Shortly after Smith began his bible study he was introduced to Lonnie Frisbee, who impressed Smith with his charisma. Frisbee was a long-haired, radical hippie and Jesus look-a-like who mentored the likes of Harvest Crusade’s Greg Laurie. Frisbee’s Jesus-like locks, and his connections to the hippie world meant growth for Calvary Chapel. By 1968, Frisbee was a leader within the Calvary Chapel movement, and by 1971 the Jesus Movement was well underway; influencing pop culture to the extent that Elton John made reference to “Jesus freaks” in his song Tiny Dancer. Frisbee and Smith were a dynamic team and arguably two of the most influential players in the Jesus Movement, yet in 1971 they parted ways due to Smith’s reluctance to embrace Frisbee’s enthusiasm for experience-based signs and wonders. Smith was known for being a verse by verse bible teacher, and rightly concluded that an emphasis on experience was dangerous; even coining the term “charismania”. This verse by verse emphasis generally continued throughout the Calvary Chapel movement, however, in recent years especially, there have been many egregious errors.
After Smith’s passing in late 2013, his son in law Brian Broderson took over the Costa Mesa operation (the Mecca of Calvary Chapel’s). Broderson has aligned himself with several emergent heretics, from Nicky Gumbel to Rick Warren. Of course, Broderson isn’t the only Calvary Chapel pastor to head down a dark path. Bob Coy resigned from Calvary Chapel Ft. Lauderdale after being caught in adultery. Calvary Chapel Kendall’s Pedro Garcia quietly made his church a “Hillsong Family” church, submitting to their heretical network. Not long after, Pedro was removed due to “lifestyle choices”. It’s a sad day when a church that covered up pedophilia for decades removes you. I wonder what he did. Calvary Chapel Golden Spring’s pastor Raul Ries has allowed his degenerate son, Ryan, to not only serve in the church (ah… shameless nepotism), but has left his heretical endorsements unaddressed. Ryan is good friends with and promoter of Brian “Head” Welch, whom “God has led” back into the satanic band Korn, according to him. I thought God did not tempt anyone with evil. Maybe I missed something. Ryan also recently attended the Azusa Now apostasy gathering which included Lou Engle literally kissing the feet of a catholic priest. Ryan’s thoughts on that? ….“beyond epic”. On an “epic” note, I would encourage you to look at the official IRS 990 documents showing Raul Ries’ $500,000.00 per/year salary (not uncommon for mega church pastors). That’s epic… and might I add, thoroughly consistent with the biblical model… isn’t it?
Well, the plot thickens. I used to attend Calvary of Albuquerque, headed by pastor and CEO Skip Heitzig. Skip studied under Chuck Smith, and later came to Albuquerque to start his big business, and boy did he. With an average weekly attendance of 13,000, and friends like Franklin Graham; they have tremendous influence. For 3 years I was heavily involved here early in my christian walk, and was the leader of an apologetics ministry through their college group. Being at the church 3 days a week if not more was regular for me, and I saw first-hand the boyish and nepotistic nature of these guys. Skip had an assistant pastor named Chip. Skip and Chip (sounds like a cartoon); both employed their sons Nate and Jesse to “pastor”. Chip Lusko is also father to fledgling heretic Levi Lusko, who has received the coveted Passion Conference invitation 2 years in a row. Levi has also embraced the Alpha Course’s Nicky Gumbel, Steven Furtick, Carl Lentz, Ed Young Jr., and recently spoke with Joyce Meyer.
I regularly attended a bible study on Wednesday mornings with a man named Sam Garcia. Sam is both a bible study leader and the head of web development for Calvary Albuquerque. I left Calvary Chapel in 2012, but given my association with Sam, thought it fit to warn him of Levi Lusko’s heretical associations, given that Calvary still hosts Levi, and promotes his material. Levi is a good friend to all things Calvary Chapel as well as Greg Laurie and others. Truly hoping Sam would listen, I detailed Levi’s compromise over the last few years and showed that he was in sin by “mere” virtue of his promotion of false teachers. Here is what Calvary Chapel’s bible study “teacher” said to me.
“..to judge Levi Lusko as spiritually “dangerous” simply because you deemed Steven Furtick, Carl Lentz, John Piper, Beth Moore, Christine Caine, Rick Warren, Louie Giglio, Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen and Brian Houston as dangerous. This simply tells me that you purport yourself to be a Berean but are the furthest thing from it. It is clear to me that you’ve never heard teachings from these people, but judge them as false teachers, prosperity teachers, or spiritually dangerous without ever having heard them.”
He then goes on to say,
“I encourage you to look at the extremely fruitful ministries of Steven Furtick, Carl Lentz, John Piper, Beth Moore, Christine Caine, Rick Warren, Louie Giglio, Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen and Brian Houston.”
That’s right, folks; pope lover Rick Warren is a “fruitful” minister, according to Sam. If you had any doubt, this man told me that Joyce Meyer and Joel Osteen were “EXTREMELY frutiful” ministers. Joel Osteen? This is the, “fill out your name” part of the test. Even Benny Hinn rebuked Joel Osteen….BENNY HINN; the other false teacher!! Any dunce with a shirt on can tell that Mr. “discover the champion in you” is a fraud. When a false teacher can spot a false teacher better than you, something is severely wrong. I still can’t believe what he wrote. Is this what Calvary Chapel has become? YES.
Skip still allows Rick Warren to be played on their radio station, Connection Radio, with no regard for his ecumenical agenda. On that note, Calvary’s second radio station, Star 88, was home to a weekly show called “Shock Therapy” where hipsters gathered to give advice that they are not qualified to give, as the questions are generally not related to hair gel or skinny jeans. On one such episode (2/4/2016), they began to promote contemplative prayer (@ 26:00min). These men are all employed by Calvary Chapel.
After receiving Sam’s shocking email, I sent an open letter addressed to as many Calvary Albuquerque “pastors” as I could, including their core group, asking if these statements were the held consensus of them and Skip personally. It has been over two months and I have yet to receive a response. This man says that Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, Rick Warren, Christine Caine, Beth Moore, etc. are “extremely fruitiful” ministers, and nobody has a response???

I greatly appreciate your response to my post. It is so discouraging sometimes that people involved in these groups cannot hear nor can they see. I feel like the Lord has shown me that we are to seek to warn them but, at some point, we have to stop trying.
2 Thessalonians 2 tells us that they did not love the truth enough to remain in it. They have been given a strong delusion by the Lord Himself.
While I find this terrifying, I realize that God is God. I want to encourage you by affirming that I know that what you have posted about all of these ministries is the absolute truth. I cannot explain the relief and freedom that I began to get when the Lord began to reveal to me what the enemy was doing in the deep darkness that these people in leadership are moving in.
People have been conditioned to have a knee-jerk reaction to anything involving a conspiracy. This is nothing short of mind control operating in people as a whole. This has been done because there is indeed a conspiracy afoot and they have brilliantly hidden it.
I am going to go out on a limb here and say a couple of things about the Vineyard and MorningStar. It took a great deal of warfare but finally I was able to discover that both organizations have existing and historical ties to Government Intelligence Agencies. When I talk about spiritual warfare these groups do not play. They do everything that they possibly can think of to make sure that darkness obscures what they are doing. I am not going to go into great detail here but I will say that the Jesus Movement that the Vineyard was large sprung from has strong ties to the CIA. Gerry Boykin has historical ties to Chuck Smith. Gerry Boykin is a Knight of Malta and he was in charge of the Special Operations Delta Teams at Fort Bragg, NC. Delta operators are nothing short of mind controlled killers. They are created by classified technology developed from project MK-Ultra. The book Thanks For the Memories by Brice Taylor is a great book to gain insight into this evil.
Now Gerry Boykin is curiously very deeply connected to MorningStar. Matt Petersen was Associate Pastor at MorningStar. Now he is Currently Pastor at Winston Salem MorningStar Fellowship. Good old Matt Petersen was or more likely still is a CIA agent. Not kidding.
A lot of people do not realize the deep ties that the intelligence agencies have to the occult. They would do well to find out. There is a great deal more to mention but I run the risk of losing too much credibility which has probably become tenuous from this post already.

I had some difficulty reading your post (though it was interesting) because of the lack of punctuation and missing words made it very difficult to understand some of the content/continuity. Albeit it was very interesting.
I listened to a radio interview of Chuck Smith a couple years ago and was shocked that he stated that “Catholics are Christians” too not to mention other questionable or unbiblical ideas he had discussed with the interviewer. With that in mind I was dismayed that Chuck’s brother, Paul Smith and his wife, were invited to preach at a church in Devore, CA. Not surprisingly wrong ideas and teachings can be shared within denominations and church franchises as well as nepotistic preaching families.
I listened and watched closely and wasn’t surprised when Ruth Smith, Paul’s wife, told us all that she spoke at a Catholic women’s conference, at the same church, sharing about how these “lovely Catholic nuns”, whom she was fellowshipping with and teaching at their conference brought such joy to her in their fellowship. No one at the Devore Church batted an eye and only one other woman wondered about that comment.
We too easily accept popular Christian pastors/teacher and their ministries and not question them or their teaching and associations with other heretical teachers, or their carnal emotional outbursts. Are we not able to judge one another righteously? This same church did not vet the background of the Smith’s, their teaching and another regular guest speaker and popular South African pastor/teacher (who’s on the outs) but blamed THEIR OWN lack of discernment (they claim to be a discernment church) on the fault of the S.African heretic because he didn’t tell them what he actually believed. Go figure?
I believe your connection with MKUltra and black ops and the infiltration of the Christian church as devilish but if they were truly Bereans we wouldn’t they have seen this all and held their ground? CORRECTION: JAN/PAUL CROUCH sr., we’re having employees pray that people die that came up against and corrected their ministry. A fascinating article. Churches continually maneuver for the trifecta of power, fame, and fortune. Call them out on it and they show you the door.
Sounds to me like you have done good work but, you’ve gotten too busy listing the sins of others, and probably spent way too much time on this. The devil is pretty slick all right, and I believe you are speaking the truth, but he’s got you spending hours thinking about his crap, and you’ve not been thinking about Jesus. I get it. I’ve been there too. I never did ‘get’ churches, and how they operate. It has never worked for me. I like very small fellowships held in homes, where people worship Jesus, and each person brings special ministry to the group. Each member of Christ’s body comes to contribute. Each is honoured because it is the Spirit of God teaching encouraging and blessing through each other. It’s awesome. Big churches are not for me, and I no longer feel guilty about not belonging to one. Satan himself has entered in to those outfits. Hello Kate. Finding fellowships like that are extremely rare. Often you have to start one. You can look up via a Google search for house churches or home church. There are often websites with search results by state. I won’t post those links here as I do not know if it’s allowed. Besides, if you look you will find them.
Do realize that house churches are not perfect either. Often they are controlling and border on, if not right out, cult status. You must be very careful entering into these types of groups. Not that there aren’t any good ones out there, there are, it’s just as in all things, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Nothing this side of heaven is going to be perfect. I wish you the best in your search. Know that in the meantime, not every branch of Calvery Chapel is bad. I listen online to JD Farag (he is in Hawaii). I truly enjoy his testimony and honesty. You might want to listen to his broadcasts while you are searching.
Kate & Beth: BIG problem with the House2House movements is the organized church leaders take them over because they want the money and to CONTROL. People are still dealing with these evil organizations and the item is they will lie to cover that up.

Skip Heitzig is one of the 13 on the board of directors of the CCA. He is deceiving and being deceived. He invited Jesus Culture to lead worship at Calvary ABQ not a month ago. He is close personal friends of Levi Lusko, a blooming heretic and friend of every wind of doctrine. Unfortunately as Spurgeon said, “no protest can equal that of distinct separation.” Calvary as a name alone is tainted. They all operate by the “Distinctives” This is a business strategy, not biblical conformity. Calvary ABQ, for example, spends $6.25 MILLION per year on salaries and benefits alone (48%) of total expenditures… ONLY 6% goes to missions and outreach. This is par for the course for the entire movement. Not pleasant to digest, but necessary. Get out while you can.

I have to agree, Josh. I have tried going back to various CCs over the course of the 30 yrs I’ve been following Christ and though I was not close enough to witness mishandling of monies, I had a very close friend who was treasurer of one CC and left due to financial disagreements. On a personal note, I have been burned by the leadership on more than one occasion, at more than one location. A clear violation of the pastoral office wherein I called out the senior pastor and his wife for gossiping about my situation to others only to be shut down and and waived off….and this after being a member for almost 10 yrs.
Over the years my experience with church has not been optimal but I continued to go out of faithfulness to the word and to God. The only reason I didn’t not walk away from the Lord after my dealings with CC is because I refused to let the actions of man be the reflection of God. God is God and He rules from His throne with full knowledge of everything going on in this world and He still is sovereign! It will all be as He said … in the end, He wins!! Hallelujah!!
I think so often we forget that all fall short of the glory of God, that we’re all sinners, even pastors(along with all those obsessed with finding false doctrines and things wrong with the church RATHER than just following Christ and proclaiming Him unto all the nations as He’s called us to do.) I have attended and am an associate pastor with a calvary chapel in Hawaii. Making blanket statements, saying all Calvary Chapels are this way or that is completely wrong. I can honestly tell you that our small church of 100 something people give to missions. That around half of all tithes that come in goes to missions. Supporting missionaries in 5 different countries.
We’re called to the mission of God which is to share the good news of Jesus. Not to continually point out faults in different doctrines on how the church operates.
Joe, giving to missions does not absolve one from the guilt of looking the other way in the face of grievous error. If you are a part of the CCA then you are subject to leadership that is promoting heresy. You are clearly biased because your job depends upon in, Joe, which makes you a hireling, not a good shepherd. You have no biblical or factual objection to what has been presented. Hibbs, Stewart, Laurie, Broderson, Ries, Heitzig, etc. are all liked up and promoting the Hillsong agenda; Greg Laurie now a TBN regular. While Broderson is not part of the CCA its core leadership promote him still and if you are subject to that leadership with no concern, you have become one who aids and abets that error. Giving to missions does not permit the promotion (tacit or otherwise) of compromise and/or heresy. You have unfortunately fall prey to a corporatist mindset. Run as quickly and as fast as you can from CC. I unfortunately assisted the start up the first Big Island CC when requested to help by John Higgins. When it became apparent the pastor was a sexual deviant and I exposed it, I was asked to leave the church. It took 10 years before CC finally kicked out the pastor.
I was in the Shiloh houses from 1969-1971 and have many, many stories from back in those days. Just run. That’s my advice.

Not only is Rick Warren (friend of the Pope) on KNKT, but Levi Lusko is a family friend to Calvary and regularly speaks there. As you may know by now, Jesus Culture was recently there leading worship the same weekend Ryan Ries was there promoting his “tour”. Calvary spends 48% of their expenditures on salaries and benefits while only 6% goes to missions and outreach. Sam Garcia, who is head of their web team, and a bible study leader as well, told me through email, that Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, Brian Houston, Steven Furtick, etc were “faithful ministers of God.” It seems the compromise of Calvary knows no bounds…. GET OUT! It is only getting worse… The leadership is corrupt.

They invited so called dr. Caroline Leaf from Australia to come and speak and as she often quotes Rob Bell and other New Age Heretics on her Instagram account, you would think there would have been more discernment, but there was a complete lack of it, and this was coming from the top on down, so if you cannot trust that the senior pastor has discernment how can you trust anything? I used to work for Greg Laurie in the early 90’s and overheard him and another Pastor talking about the headcount of one of the services and them having to pass aroundanother tithe & offering because it wasn’t meeting their quota. I truly believe he started out right and has a heart for evangelism but got caught up in being a pastor (which I believe is an evangelist not a pastor) at a mega church. He stopped all services that would wait on the Holy Spirit and does not allow anyone to stand up during worship unless the worship leader stands first. He lives in Irvine and has a luxurious home and car and keeps on building bigger buildings and getting more people to come to his church (through his false teaching and funny stories) to give more money. He also use to get things in the mail that were written sermons that he and other pastors used to teach from so they didn’t have to do their own. It’s sad and I am so glad the Lord removed me from that church.

I had stopped going to a Calvary Chapel and which I knew that church well before it became a Calvary and yet too I started in Raul Ries original church in the late 70’s before I myself moved away in 1981 with family as a teenager .I left that Calvary I mention first ( one year back ) because I do not understand the worship as it changed a lot and maybe it was the church got so very big the noise and accousticals got to be too much ! I am honestly trying to understand things of why i might of changed my perspective in this . I DO give credit to Calvary Chapels that I learned to seek to study the Bible from them .I might of outgrown some things too possibly .
It almost seemed something in the morning service made me get burned out when I had stayed there over 6 years total. I am though still in the Word and reading abundantly and getting other books to study scripture and keep up on things ( I think I been away from the big city far too long ). This Calvary was far too busy to talk about things like reminiscing on scripture and friendly conversations in between services and such .
I had trouble with two people that talked like wolves that took me on Sunday night to that church and I tried to resolve and think of what I can do to help make it better and positive for a few years now. Asking if anyone can pray I remain ongoing and strong no matter what as would hunger for scripture and study and read often and discern what goes on around me and look to Jesus daily . I really had been studying and pondering scripture and history for a long time and glad I kept it up for many years as a Christian.

Not so sure about the original post. I am a MacArthur/Friel-style reformed evangelical and have attended Calvary for a year. I have found the actual membership to be Christ-loving, diverse, and on-target. Ministries are deeper than the average church. Can’t speak to Levi and his associations, but the church preaches the blood of Christ, focuses on expository preaching, and has a strong Christ-based congregation. Maybe the original poster here has an agenda or a bit too much pride?

I don’t know the full story of all of these churches (beyond Joel Osteen’s Lakewood), but it does seem to me that you are spending rather a lot of time going over faults in a great many churches. No church will be perfect, and while the prosperity gospel (Joyce Mayer, Benny Hinn, Osteen etc.) is dangerous, just because a church makes mistakes doesn’t make them apostates. Apostasy is turning away from God, not all the people you discuss have done so. Maybe it would be better for you to make videos/articles on what truth is, rather than shooting down others for what you see as false truth.

Give me a Pastor/Priest/Church that is truly taking care of the Poor, Homeless, Fatherless, Widow, Single Parents and their Children and building strong families rather than the dumbing down and brainwashing ALL these FALSE heretic Leaders are doing. Occult hides sin, lives in darkness, doesn’t live in truth and sweeps sin under the carpet which sounds like every movement/regime that these wolves, hirelings, hucksters, con-men/women in the guise of dead religion are serving. THIS SITE IS doing the right thing. Came across two homeless people in 30’s and tried to get them help. NOT one Church, Pastor and or Christian would step up to the plate. Do you know anyone who truly helps and lives the gospel and NOT all this dead rhetoric that they are serving up? You should have heard the excuses even from false agencies set up in the guise of Christian! We need MORE sites like this.

That said, their whole wives listed as co-elders theme, is wildly unbiblical and sure to be the source of future error. Under the heading of “senior pastor” both Tim and Heidi. I’ve also never heard of “equipping ministry” before. But it appears as if there are as many female leaders as there are male leaders. This will be a big problem. Not to mention they are part of an organization which is steeped in compromise. Please see the posted video. I came across your article while trying to dig up info on Raul Ries. I used to attend his brother’s, Xavier Ries, church in Alhambra back in the mid 80s. Xavier Ries was a hardcore racist back then. He used to make racial comments about Asians during his sermons. I learned recently that he went on record with his support for Trump with a Pasadena newspaper. Apparently, he got into hot water during one of his sermons by mentioning Trump and veering the sermon towards politics. In the Pasadena newspaper interview he states he has a problem with Mexican illegals. Odd, since he is Mexican as well. But, Raul Ries has always been a dirt bag. In the mid 80’s he was telling people how he came to God. He stated that he planned to kill his wife. He stated he loaded the shotgun and was waiting for to come home when God spoke to him. This is depicted in the movie “Fury to Freedom” the movie about his “life story”. The guy is a dirt bag. In the early 2000s he was claiming to be a former MMA fighter.
